Holy Habits 7 - Evangelism

Worship:

Sing along to our ‘Holy Habits Theme Song’:

Then enjoy some further worship with a classic action song!  ‘Jesus You’re My Superhero’ by Hillsong Kids:

Word:

The very last thing that Jesus said to his disciples, his followers, before He went back up into heaven was: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1: 8)  Jesus asks us to do this too; to talk about Him to other people. Tell other people what He is like, what He is good at, why He is such a good friend, how much He loves everyone, how He can forgive wrong-doings…to describe him to others!

In Matthew 28 verses 19-20, Jesus gives us all a ‘commission’; a special job to do for Him.  Watch ‘What is the Great Commission?’ by LifeKids to help you understand how we are all part of this:

Jesus trusts us with this special job and He really wants us to be willing to talk about Him.  If we practise and allow telling others about God (evangelising) to become a holy habit; something that we just do, it will become easier, we will have more confidence to talk about God and the difference He makes to us.

I wonder how you would describe Jesus to others?  What would you say about him?

The best thing is though that we don’t have to be afraid of talking about God with others, because if you look back at Acts 1 verse 8, we are never alone, we have Holy Spirit with us; to show us who to talk to, to help us to know what to say.  We can pray that we have our ‘spiritual ears’ open and know when and what to do.  It is also really good to pray for our friends and others who do not yet know Jesus.

Activity Suggestions:

“Good News!”

Use the template to create your own newspaper headline and news story to tell your friends the good news about Jesus.  Think about what they need to know, how having a relationship with Jesus makes a difference in your life and why they should follow Jesus too.  You could post a copy of your newspaper to a friend if you are feeling bold!

Prayer cube:

Print out the net of a cube onto thin card.  Think and pray about five of your friends you would like to introduce to Jesus.  On each face of the cube write their name or draw a picture of them or stick a photo of them.  Then make into a cube.

Decide a time each day.  Roll the ‘dice’ and pray for your friend who is uppermost on the cube.  Pray that Holy Spirit will be opening their heart ready to find out more about Jesus.  Pray that when you get chance to talk about Jesus with them, you’ll be ready!

Reflection:

Sit quietly for a few moments and be quiet with God.  Ask Him who He wants us to pray for, who He wants to come to know Jesus.  God might put pictures of our friends or of other children we know in our minds, so let’s tune in those ‘spiritual ears’ we’ve talked about on other weeks…

Let’s pray:

Lord Jesus,

Thank you for the people you’ve put in our minds right now.  Help us to be good friends to them and to find ways to tell them and show them all about the Good News of Jesus.  Help us as we practise holy habits over the summer to become more like you Jesus, so others can see you more easily.

Amen.
