Holy Habits 6 - Community
Video
Worship:
Have you learnt the words yet to our ‘Holy Habits Theme Song’?
When we worship God, we remember that God is Holy, so let’s have fun praising our Heavenly Father who is Holy but also our friend with ‘Lord I Lift your Name on High’ by Go Fish (with a cool Lego worship video):
Word:
This week’s Holy habit is ‘Community’. This is all about choosing to spend time together with other followers of Jesus, to support one another in the journey of becoming more like Jesus.
Read Acts 2:42-47 together. This gives us a picture of the very first church being in community after Pentecost. What did this community of people do? Challenge: Can you find 10 different things?
This video (‘What is the Church?’ by LifeKids) helpfully shows us how ‘church’ is not a building, but the people - we are all the community of the family of The Well Sheffield:
This video (‘God does great things through His church’ by KidSpring) shows why we need one another, why being in community strengthens us and helps us to serve God better:
Extra: If you want to explore this further, read 1 Corinthians 12 which explains how we are all given different spiritual gifts so that we can help one another in our community.
Some things to think about:
I wonder what you enjoy most about being in community with others at The Well Sheffield?
I wonder how you could live like the first community (Acts 2: 42-47)?
I wonder if you could gather in smaller communities with another family to study God’s word and pray and support each other?
Activity Suggestions:
Sculpture:
Make a sculpture that shows how we are all connected and important in our community of The Well Sheffield. You could use food (eg; grapes, raisins, cheese chunks, melon chunks etc with cocktail sticks) or playdough or junk modelling and create a sculpture on the theme of ‘connectedness’. I’d love to see your creations! You can email me a photo at jodie.thorpe@wellsheffield.com
Multi-coloured picture:
Tape together a collection of pencil crayons or felt tip pens (without their lids on) using masking tape. Then draw a picture. I’m sure it will create a multi-coloured design, but did you find it a positive or a frustrating experience, drawing when all the pens are connected together? Sometimes being with others takes effort, but it’s worth it!
Friendship bracelet:
Make a friendship bracelet using multi-coloured threads and as you do think about how the different threads come together to make a colourful pattern, which is a little like how our community at The Well is; all different, but better together! The simplest bracelet is three threads, knot at one end and then plait the three chords and knot at the end. (There are lots of instruction videos online if you’re not sure how to get started - some more complicated than others!). You might choose to send/give your bracelet to one of your friends from The Well?
Reflection:
Spend some time reflecting on how everyone is different, but we are all made in God’s image. There are many blessings to be had by living our lives in community with other followers of Christ. You might want to watch ‘The Blessings (Kids)’ as you think about this:
