Pause for Thought?
Pause for Thought is a noble sentiment. But I wonder how much you and I actually do that? How often we give ourselves the gift of time and space to catch our breath from the hurly burly of everyday life, and simply pause to reflect? To think, to delve deeper and discover more about ourselves and the world, and perhaps to reassess what our foundations are built upon.
It’s not easy, is it? There are a hundred and one demands on our time; from work and family commitments, to the necessary chores like shopping and cleaning. And even a simple task seems to take longer during lockdown. Added to our ‘to-do’ list there are things which we probably shouldn’t do, or at least do less of, in order really to pause and find wisdom for life.
My life is surrounded by giant digital distractions like social media or news channels, and now the football season has resumed too. We are surrounded by opinions all the time, yet there seem to be no ‘right’ answers. Experts or amateurs broadcast their thoughts to us 24/7, but everybody seems to be saying something different.
Where can I find wisdom? Whose voice should be the loudest in my mind?
For 25 years I have devoted my life to following Jesus’ path towards wholeness, wisdom and peace: both in the present and for eternity. I have found making space to pray and read the bible is like tapping into a deep well of wisdom.
Making the deliberate choice to receive guidance from God helps me discern what really matters in life.
This week, why not carve out some space to pause for thought? Let us find encouragement from the ancient proverb:
For the Lord grants wisdom!
From his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest.
He is a shield to those who walk with integrity.
He guards the paths of the just
and protects those who are faithful to him. Then you will understand what is right, just, and fair,
and you will find the right way to go.
For wisdom will enter your heart,
and knowledge will fill you with joy.
Wise choices will watch over you.
Understanding will keep you safe.(Proverbs. 2:6-11 NLT)
