Why Worry?
Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? Tough times may be looming. You may be facing debt or sickness or family troubles.
A lot we worry about is future-oriented, the ‘what if?’ questions of life. It is a curious emotion, and irrational. It is placing your emotions at the mercy of an event which hasn’t happened and may never happen. We are held hostage by fear and fretting. We run scary scenarios through our minds. Worry undermines hope and purpose in life, it prevents us from making the most of things.
Is there more solid ground to build our thoughts and dreams upon?
Jesus paints a picture, it almost sounds like a fairy tale yet below the surface is a foundation of solid rock.
“Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?
Jesus doesn’t deny that hard times come in everybody’s lives. What He proclaims is that you and I can find a place of security in our identity, not in our capacity. My identity as a Christian reminds me that ultimately God is in control, not me, and God is very good and trustworthy, whatever our circumstances. It provides me with strength for today, and bright hope for tomorrow.
From this foundation I can hear and put Jesus’ advice into action.
“I tell you not to worry about everyday life… your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek God above all else, and he will give you everything you need.” (Matthew 6)
The best protection you can have from worry is the security of knowing you are safe in God’s love, whatever your future may hold.
